Members of the CCSSAR were recently invited to prepare and support various stations for a kindergarten PSAR event in Page, AZ. Activities included K-9 demonstration, instruction on how to search for clues, demonstration on good pack/bad pack and preparedness, and discussion of the Ten Essentials and Hug-a-Tree.
Following this successful and fun event, these are some of the comments the team received from school staff:
- I cannot thank you enough for all the work you put into the Search and Rescue/Sheriff visit! The experiences our students received today were terrific! The staff were amazing in that they so easily communicated with 5- and 6-year-olds at their level of understanding! Everything was timed perfectly and the stations were interesting and engaging! I hope that we can not only continue to offer this to our kinder students but to expand with fire and police and to include our entire student population! Thank you so much for this great learning opportunity!
- Today was amazing! The kids loved it all and they even learned some things! They loved the boat and dogs the best of course, but they also loved when the pack presenters showed how they could carry someone on the big tarp. That trick got lots of oohs and ahhs. It surprised me how many of my students did not know Big Bird Yellow. I wonder if that’s history for these young ones. The way the presenters organized the search by clues was very well done also (just my kids were getting squirrely). It was a great morning and I am so glad we could do it! Thank you to all the presenters!!
- This morning’s presentation with Search and Rescue and the Sheriff’s department was wonderful. The information was presented in an effective and meaningful way for our students. The presenters were cognizant of the age of their audience and gave short lessons with many opportunities for the kids to interact and respond. My students loved the coloring pages and of course, all immensely enjoyed watching the dogs search for people and “train” on the playground. As we are part of the Coconino County, it could very well be that these people might have to look for one of our kids someday. Many of our students have encountered law enforcement and other first responders during crisis situations that may not have been positive. This presentation helped them to see these people as helpful, caring friends that are there to keep them safe. I would definitely recommend this presentation to any school and gladly participate again.
- The Search and Rescue and Sheriff’s department activities were wonderful and our students enjoyed it tremendously. We would love for you guys to come up and do it again. The kids were engaged and the presenters did a great job bringing the information to the kindergartener’s level. Thank you so much for all your time and effort!
CCSSAR looks forward to participating in this PSAR event again in the future.
