Coconino County Sheriff’s SAR UAS Program Takes Off

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue unit implemented unmanned aerial systems (UAS), or sometimes referred to as “drones,” technology in April 2018 with a private donation of a DJI Phantom 4.  In November 2018, with the help of a grant provided by the Arizona Community Foundation, the unit purchased two DJI Mavic 2 Enterprise UAS for use in search and rescue operations.

Recent SAR Operation Locates One Alive and One Deceased

Blue Ridge, AZ – The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office recently conducted a search and rescue operation over a five-day period for two lost persons east of the Hutch Mountain area. One person was located alive (a 35-year-old female of Winslow, AZ), the other person was located deceased (38-year-old Ryan Long of Leupp, AZ).

Backcountry Winter Hazards

Flagstaff, AZ – On February 3, 2019 at approximately 5:00 PM the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Unit responded to a report of an overdue skier who had left the ski area boundary at Arizona Snowbowl and entered the Kachina Peaks Wilderness. The skier, a 16-year-old male from Flagstaff, became separated from his group and the rest of the group returned to the Arizona Snowbowl where they made the report to the Arizona Snowbowl Ski Patrol.
