On May 11, Coconino County Search and Rescue conducted a two-hour PSAR event for 39 children with the fifth grade.  Four teams demonstrated some of our capabilities: (1) compass use/basic navigation; (2) K9; (3) Mounted; and (4) Mountain Rescue.  Overarching the demonstrations was the importance of science in enabling us to carry out our missions.

The children had a great morning learning the basics of navigation with a compass, understanding the different types of search dogs that we use and watching demonstrations of the dogs finding “lost” volunteers, learning the role of horses in searches and some basics on how they behave and should be cared for and, finally, learning about the personal and team equipment used for high angle rescue and the advantages of using mechanical advantage when rigging.
